In 2019 efforts were made to better understand the threat of Phytophthora species on the endangered C. Ferrisiae, as well as the surrounding communities. Tedmund Swiecki and Elizabeth Bernhardt endeavored to identify Phytophthora species that were presently or might become threats, and develop a management plan to deal with them. They collected 189 samples from Santa Clara County Parks, and Santa Clara County Open Space Authority preserves. Results showed 20 Phytophthora taxa were present across water, soil, and root samples. They detail how eradication of these taxa is quite difficult and emphasize prevention of spread as a best method for dealing with the invasion.
