Currently presumed extant at only one site on the Monterey Peninsula in California. Historical locations from Los Angeles and San Diego counties are known, but repeated searches have failed to relocate them and very little, if any, suitable habitat remains in these areas due to heavy urbanization, naval amphibious vehicle training exercises, and recreational development. One extant population varies greatly in size from year to year. It has been bisected by a road (which may have altered the local hydrology) and is now sandwiched between a horse trail that runs next to a golfing green and the edge of the ocean bluffs. These remaining plants face threats from trampling by hikers, picnickers and others, and from agressive, rapidly spreading non-native plant species. The remaining site is not protected.
