Fall is definitely the harvest season for seeds in the southeastern US.  Seeds from forty-seven maternal lines of Liatris gholsonii, Gholson's blazingstar, were collected across three sites at Torreya State Park.  It has taken a dedicated team to get these seeds processed and banked at both the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the National Laboratory for Genetic Resource Preservation.

Seed collection at the Garden is truly a team effort.  These collections at Torreya State Park were led by our Florida-based team members Ashlynn Smith, Gulf Coast Coordinator, Cami Adams, Field Biologist, and Marcella Johnson, Summer Intern. Intake of seeds and their data is then processed by Amanda Carmichael, Conservation Laboratories Supervisor.  Also, this field season we were lucky to have the dedicated help of our Seed Bank Technician Tito Francisco to clean and process these and so many other seeds that came through our labs. Some seeds staying with us will now undergo viability testing and the rest are bound for our ex situ Conservation Seed Bank.
