The "original" seeds were are including in our submission of Carex comosa seeds for the Seed Longevity Study are from 2003, the very first year that Rare Care started collected and storing seed in the Miller Seed Vault. Since that collection the seeds are no longer considered a species of concern in Washington State, but as they are some of our oldest seeds in long term preservation we are interested to see the viability results from this study. To reach these plants you need a boat because they are growing on floating mats that cannot be accessed easily from land.

  • Orthodox Seed Banking

In 2021, CPC contracted University of Washington Botanic Garden to recollect seed from a population currently held in long term orthodox seed storage as part of an IMLS-funded seed longevity experiment. The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation will evaluate how germination tested viability and RNA Integrity of seed lots decline over time in storage.
