  • Genetic Research

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance postdoctoral fellow Dr. Stephanie Steele used RDAseq to evaluate the transcriptomics of Torrey Pine trees at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and Torrey Pines Extension in San Diego. She compared gene expression of Torrey Pine trees that were healthy to those apparently suffering from bark beetle infestation. Her RNA seq analysis found that while there is little genetic diversity among Torrey Pine individuals, there were significant differences in gene expression in defense, suggesting that some adaptive potential may exist to adapt to bark beetle outbreaks. Her article is published in Conservation Genetics: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10592-021-01394-7

  • Reintroduction Propagation Research

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is leading an experimental reintroduction of Torrey Pines at Torrey Pine State Natural Reserve. This effort is a collaboration with SDZWA, California State Parks, US Forest Service, and CPC National Office. So far, there have been two outplanting events in January 2021 and February 2022. These ~350 seedlings are distributed across 18 experimental plots consisting of three treatment types: existing Torrey pines forest; areas of recent Torrey pine dieback, and areas in the park that have not been recently occupied by adult stature Torrey pines. Seedling mortality and growth are being tracked semi-annually and in concert with assessment of adult torrey pine trees. All seedlings for this reintroduction were growth in the shade house at San Diego Zoo Safari Park campus by Tobin Weatherson.
