Potamogeton hillii, or Hill’s pondweed, is a perennial, aquatic member of the pondweed family. It is found in the Northeastern and upper Midwestern USA and Ontario. It is an obligate wetland species, that typically grows in alkaline or calcareous, clear water. Is can be confused with P. foliosus, but P. hillli tends to have longer leaves (approximately 0.8 – 2.3 inches long) and has three ridges (keels) on its fruit. All of P. hilli’s leaves are submerged, but its flowering stalk extends above the surface of the water. It has small, non-showy green flowers. Hill’s pondweed is of conservation concern because it is fairly uncommon throughout its range and has a narrow habitat preference. Also, because it is an obligate wetland species, it can be threatened by anything that disturbs a sites hydrology or diminishes water quality.
