Pineland poinsettia (Euphorbia pinetorum)

In 2024, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden conservation team members chose Seminole Wayside Addition Preserve, an Environmentally Endangered Lands Program (EEL) preserve, to collect the Florida state endangered Pineland poinsettia (Euphorbia pinetorum). Like most euphorbias it bears its seeds in three-lobed capsules. We used a similar approach to collecting as for euphorbias in past years, bagging developing capsules in organza drawstring bags and returning when the capsules had fully ripened and dehisced. However, care was taken to avoid a more common related species Paintedleaf (Euphorbia cyathophora) by looking for the characteristic purple tinged capsules and multiple nectaries of the Pineland poinsettia. After three visits we were able to collect 132 seeds from 21 maternal lines.

According to a March 2023 extract of the Florida Plant Rescue Database, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden holds 1 accessions of Euphorbia pinetorum totalling approximately 108 seeds representing 21 maternal lines.
