L. D. Gottleib published "The status of Clarkia australis (Onagraceae)" in the American Journal of Botany, volume 86, in 1999. The authors conducted a variety of studies, including population studies (40 individuals across 18 populations), examining chromosome numbers, a hybridization program, and morphological studies. They concluded that C. australis is distinct from neighboring species C. virgata.
