Description:

This climbing vine is a member of the mint family with typical square stems and soft hairs. It has a unique spicy odor to its leaves. It produces white flowers during its flowering season upon a stalk.

Where is Racemed Phyllostegia (Phyllostegia racemosa) located in the wild?

Habitat:

This vine species prefers soil with old volcanic substrates, typical of disturbed koa and ohi`a forests in its native range. They can also grow in tree fern-dominated Montane Mesic or Wet Forests.

Distribution:

It is endemic to the slopes of the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes on the island of Hawaii. Four populations remain today, found in the Kulani-Keauhou area, Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge, and Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, each with 25-45 individuals.

Threats to its survival include habitat fragmentation by feral pigs and domestic cattle, as well as competition with invasive plant species, like sweet vernalgrass and Vasey grass.

Four individuals are found in Hawaii among three isolated populations. These occur on private and State lands in the Kulani/Keauhou area and on Federal land managed as the Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge. There is an estimate of 25-45 individual distributed among these populations.
