Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, California Botanic Garden holds 3 accessions of Cirsium fontinale var. fontinale in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 4315 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.

found in only three locations in San Mateo County. One population occurs east of Crystal Springs Reservoir on both sides of I-280. A second population occurs in the ""Triangle"" area west of Edgewood Co. Park. The third location is in Edgewood Co. Park
