Description:

Ceanothus sonomensis, with the common name Sonoma ceanothus, is a rare species of shrub in the buckthorn family Rhamnaceae.  This shrub can grow to five feet in length and has bluish-purple flowers from February though April. [CNPS: Calscape]

Habitat:

Ceanothus sonomensis is a member of the chaparral plant community in the California montane chaparral and woodlands sub-ecoregion and has an affinity towards serpentine soil. [CNPS]

Distribution:

Ceanothus sonomensis is endemic to northern California, where it is known only from the Hood Mountain Range. Most of its 10 or so occurrences are located mailnly in Sonoma County with a few plants in Lake and Napa Counties. [CNPS]

Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden holds 1 accessions of Ceanothus sonomensis in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 50 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.
