Description:

Punalu`u Cyanea has vibrant purple flowers, arranged on racemes. Each flower is tubular in shape. Current threats to this taxon include competition with invasive plant species and feral pigs, which caused near extinction to this already rare species.

Where is Punaluu Cyanea (Cyanea truncata) located in the wild?

Habitat:

This species prefers habitats of windward slopes in mesic to wet forests at elevations between 250-400 m.

Distribution:

Found in the dense native forests of O'ahu's Ko'olau Mountains, this Cyanea species may only have one individual representing it's species in the wild. Otherwise, it can be found in cultivations for further study and future rehabilitation.
