As its common name implies, Brodiaea kinkiensis is a perennial brodiaea that is endemic to the San Clemente Island off the coast of Los Angeles. In its blooming season (May – June), its blooms are erect and tube-like. Starting from its white perianth tube and brown/purple midribs, the petals of the San Clemente Island Brodiaea gradually darken into a deep violet shade. On San Clemente Island, B. kinkiensis favors clay flats in valley grasslands at elevations past 1000ft. Though its conservation status is currently Imperiled, they are progressively recovering their populations since the removal of their primary threat – grazing feral livestock that freely roamed the island.

Ecological Relationships

Before their mass removal in the 1980s, San Clemente Island had a native population of feral goats that regularly grazed the island's native flora including B. kinkiensis. As their populations increased, so did their threat to the perennial's conservation status. Government ordered removal of the goats has greatly contributed to the steady recovery of B. kinkiensis
