Restricted to a narrow part of the Rio Grande Plain of Texas and northern Mexico (Tamaulipas) and rare within that small range. There are only 3 populations known in Texas, and only a few collections in Mexico. More research on this species in Mexico is needed and it may be more common in Mexico than previously thought (pers. comm. J. Poole). The populations in Texas are quite disjunct from the nearest populations in Mexico (Poole et al. 2007). In Texas, this species is threatened by caliche mining and residential development, and in Mexico it is threatened by grazing, caliche mining, trash dumping and non-native plants and possibly oil and gas exploration.
