Also called the Dwarf Goldenstar, Bloomeria humilis is a member of the lily family that is endemic to the San Luis Obispo County. Characteristic of lilies, B. humilis has wide-spreading lobes, long leaves, and they grow from bulbs. As its name suggests, it’s also identifiable by its golden-yellow petals with brown stripes that only occur in June. Specifically, B. humilis has two occurrences in northern San Luis Obispo County: Arroyo de la Cruz and Arroyo de los Chinos. It is at both these occurrences where the Dwarf Goldenstar enjoys open, seaside grasslands/chaparral but it’s also these sorts of habitats that attract its biggest conservational threat – grazing animals.
