As part of the CPC and USFS Rare Plant Seed Banking Agreement, Maria Mullins from southwest division of the Institute for Applied Ecology led a conservation seed collection of Tonestus microcephalus in August 2020 at Carson National Forest outside the town of Tres Piedras in north central New Mexico. The IAE team collected over 3000 seeds from 59 maternal lines. However, Maria estimates that the viability of this collection is roughly 40%, with some maternal lines haveing much higher viability than others. The seed collection was divided and banked between IAE and the National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation in Fort Collins, CO.

As part of the CPC and USFS Rare Plant Seed Banking Agreement, Maria Mullins from southwest division of the Institute for Applied Ecology led a conservation seed collection of Tonestus microcephalus in August 2020.  Jessica Zhong, an intern from Chicago Botanic Garden, joined Maria on the collecting expedition to Carson National Forest outside the town of Tres Piedras in north central New Mexico. They located a population of 500 Tonestus microcephalus individuals growing in the cracks of a tall granite outcrop. Plants appeared drought stressed – many individuals did not flower and some that flowered aborted their seed set. The IAE team collected over 3000 seeds from 59 maternal lines. However, Maria estimates that the viability of this collection is roughly 40%, with some maternal lines have much higher viability than others.
