In October 2022, Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Field Technician Cami Adams and Field Biologist Liz Miller collected inflorescences from 50 maternal lines of Crystal Lake nailwort (Paronychia chartacea var. minima). This variety can be found around the margins overlooking a scenic karst lake, formed by a collapsing cave. More fleeting than the once caves in the karst region of Florida’s Washington and Bay counties is the short life cycle of this annual species, flowering in late summer or fall and fruiting by September-October. Within that narrow window, our team managed to assess two sites and return later to collect seeds from each.
