You wouldn’t know it by a leisurely walk through Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve’s Environmental Learning Center in Naples, Florida, but if you were to veer ever so slightly from the gravel path, you might step on a globally rare species. Naples Botanical Garden conservationists surveyed portions of Rookery Bay’s trail system as part of the Center for Plant Conservation’s Florida Plant Rescue initiative. We knew a few occurrences of pineland snakeherb (Dsychoriste angusta) existed there, but we did not expect to see so many.  In a 330-foot-long span, the small pineland herb numbers in the thousands, appearing to flourish in sand, loam, and rocky substrates.

Thank goodness these plants grow so closely to the path because pineland snakeherb likes to be tricky by flowering and seeding only a few individuals at a time over a two-month span. Let’s just say we know that trek well, having returned multiple times to gather seeds little by little. While the plant prospers in the wild population, it had been poorly represented in seed banks until now, thanks to the work of the Center for Plant Conservation and its participating institutions.
