In July 2023, Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Field Technician Ashton Holliday-Goulart, performed two site assessments of a private property in Bay County, Florida to search for the Bay County Indian Plantain (Arnoglossum album). The first site assessment was to confirm that the plant was still in existence and in ideal health. During site assessments it is also important to see how the site is managed and assess what the threats are to the areas. 10 acres were walked to perform a count of individuals that were vegetative, flowering, or fruiting. Ashton estimated there are at least 4,500-5,000 plants, almost all of which were vegetative. Only 24 reproductive individuals were found, 14 of which were actively fruiting and the remaining were either budding, flowering, or had gone to seed.

During the second assessment, she scoured the area again for any reproductive individuals that might not have been accounted for previously, but still came out with the same results. During this assessment the reproductive individuals from which seeds will be collected were bagged, tagged, and their locations were recorded. In total, 123 separate fruits were bagged across 5 plants. This population will be revisited for seed collection at the end of August or beginning of September. Collected seeds will be safeguarded at the ABG Conservation Seed Bank and the National Laboratory for Genetic Resource Preservation.
