Newberry’s gentian can vary from deep purple to essentially white. Var. newberryi is the variety found in Oregon, distinguished from var. tiogana, which is only found in California and Nevada. This plant can be found in massive mats of leaves with occasional upright gorgeous blooms, or in isolated clumps studded with blooms. It is found in wet-meadow, subalpine areas of low forbs and grasses in the Cascade Range. When finished blooming, the vaselike capsule rises above the spent corolla but still proves a difficult target for the eye to focus on in the beige fall meadow landscape. Shaking the vaselike capsules into the collecting envelopes yielded between 13 and 219 tiny winged seeds per capsule, with an average of 91 seeds from a good shake.
