Description:

Named in honor of renown Oregon botanist Morton E. Peck, Peck's milkvetch is an endemic species to central Oregon that is listed as threatened by the State of Oregon. This prostrate perennial has cream or yellow flowers and produces small pea pods. Peck's milkvetch often co-occurs with the Woolypod milkvetch (Astragalus purshii) and Lemmon's milkvetch (Astragalus lemmonii). A. peckii can be distinguished from the former by differences in pod morphology and from the latter which occurs on wetter habitats whereas A. peckii occurs in drier openings. Threats to this species include off road vehicles, invasive weed encroachment, and urbanization (Oregon Department of Agriculture 2023).

Habitat:

This species grows on well drained soil in openings in juniper woodlands, Poderosa pine forests, and lodgepole pine forests. Vegetation is typically sparse where this species occurs. (Oregon Department of Agriculture 2023).

    Staff at Rae Selling Berry Conservation Program have collected wild individuals of Astragalus peckii from Deschutes National Forest and their seed bank also holds accessions from many additional populations collected in collaboration with other institutions.
