  • Seed Collection

The California Native Plant Society collected fresh seeds of the rough harebell, Campanula scabrella, in 2023 for the IMLS Seed Longevity from a wild population at Mt. Eddy in Shasta-Trinity National Forest in Trinity County. We had previously monitored this population in 2021 and 2022 and knew this to be a large occurrence with hundreds of plants. We did a phenology check on July 26, 2023, and all the plants observed were still in bud and phenologically early compared to observations from previous years. When we returned on August 27, the plants at a lower elevation within the population were in fruit, but these were mostly too immature to collect. Seeds were collected from plants with mature fruit at a slightly higher elevation within the population and submitted for the study.

  • Orthodox Seed Banking

In 2021, CPC contracted the California Native Plant Society to recollect seed from a population currently held in long term orthodox seed storage as part of an IMLS-funded seed longevity experiment. The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation will evaluate how germination tested viability and RNA Integrity of seed lots decline over time in storage.
