Description:

The Intermediate Mariposa Lily is a geographic subspecies of Weed’s Mariposa Lily (Calochortus weedii). Unlike most of the other existing subspecies, that occur farther south, Calochortus weedii var. intermedius are endemic Los Angeles County into Orange County. C. w. var. intermedius  occurs in dry, chaparral/grassland habitat in rocky sediment. It’s a perennial, bulbous herb that produces petals of contrasting purple, yellow, and white shades with thin hairs coating the inner surface of the flower. The anthers inside are round and pointed. C.w. var. intermedius is currently an Imperiled species that suffers from development, non-native species, and livestock trampling.

Habitat:

C. w. var. intermedius favor chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and grassland habitats with rocky sediment. They are acclimated to dry weather. 

Distribution:

Calochortus weedii var. intermedius has a broad occurrence range in Los Angeles County including: Diamond Bar, Santa Ana, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Murrieta, and San Clemente.

Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, California Botanic Garden holds 4 accessions of Calochortus weedii var. intermedius in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 19547 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.
