Description:

Arctostaphylos purissima has two common names: Lompoc Manzanita (named after the nearby city that this species can be found) and La Purisma (named after La Purisima Mission State Historic Park that this species more specifically resides). A. purissima can be found either as a low, spreading plant or as a tall and erect tree that can be up to 4 m tall. At La Purisima, A. purissima favors chaparral fauna and sandstone sediment and can be found in bloom for about 6 months of the year (November through May) as clusters of white blooms. There are multiple threats that encroach on this Imperiled species including military activity, wildfires, local mining, grazing, and competing non-native plants.
