Description:

This perennial herb that also behaves as a climbing vine. It was thought to be its own species until the mid-1990s (USFWS 2016).

Habitat:

S. kaalae ssp. sherffii thrives in lowland mesic forests (USFWS 2016).

Distribution:

This mint family member is endemic to the Hawaiian island of O`ahu. Native to the the Ko`olau Mountains of its native island, it is now extirpated in the wild (NatureServe 2016). Any remaining individuals are at high risk to destruction by feral ungulates (USFWS 2016).

Feral ungulates have fragmented and destroyed this species' native habitat. Climate change is expected to further exacerbate that threat (USFWS 2016).
