Description:

A short-lived perennial shrub in the bellflower family, Munro's Cyanea is known from Moloka`i and Lana`i. Currently, there are no known individuals on Molokai (last observed in 2001), and only two individuals on Lanai at a single location, in the wet cliff ecosystem.

Where is Munro's Cyanea (Cyanea munroi) located in the wild?

Habitat:

The only known populations is found on Lana`i's Awehi Gulch and Moloka`i's slopes and ridges above Wailau Valley, typically in wet forests.

Distribution:

Currently this species is known only in the windward areas of Lana`i from 2,000-3,200 ft elevation but is possibly extinct on Moloka`i.

States & Provinces:

Munro's Cyanea can be found in Hawaii

Which CPC Partners conserve Munro's Cyanea (Cyanea munroi)?

CPC's Plant Sponsorship Program provides long term stewardship of rare plants in our National Collection. We are so grateful for all our donors who have made the Plant Sponsorship Program so successful. We are in the process of acknowledging all our wonderful plant sponsorship donors on our website. This is a work in progress and will be updated regularly.

Threats include browsing by deer and goats, habitat degradation from feral pigs, and competition from alien plant species.

Two remaining sites exist containing two populations with about four individuals left.

Management efforts include surveys of historic range for surviving populations, establishment of secure ex-situ stocks with complete representation of remaining individualsm, augmentation of wild population and establishment of new populations in safe harbors.

Conservation needs include surveys for populations and distribution in known and likely habitats, and active monitoring of plants for insect damage and plant diseases.

Ex-situ collection needs include development of proper horticultural protocols and pest management, surveys exsitu holdings and conduct molecular fingerprinting, conduction of pollination biology and seed dispersal studies, and mapping of genetic diversity in the surviving populations to guide future reintroduction and augmentation efforts.
