Small-flowered Phyllostegia (Phyllostegia parviflora var. lydgatei)

Phyllostegia is a near endemic Hawaiian genus in the mint family, Lamiaceae. There is one species in Tahiti, (Phyllostegia tahitensis), one in Tonga (P. tongaensis), and 32 species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Description:

This hairy herb is a nonaromatic member of the mint family. It produces inflorescences of white flowers along its branches. Today, the species is now thought to be extinct in the wild.

Preferred habitat conditions consist of disturbed mesic areas that provide loose soil, like gulch slopes.

Distribution:

P. parviflora var. lydgatei is endemic to the Waianae Mountains of Oahu, distinguished from three subpopulations in 1999.
