  • Seed Collection

As part of CPC's IMLS funded initiative to determine seed storage longevity in wild rare plant species, seed of fragrant kalmiopsis (Kalmiopsis fragrans) was collected at a Research Natural Area in the Umpqua National Forest. This plant is found only in Oregon's Douglas County, on and around tuffaceous rock. This made for a beautiful and exciting collecting site, as the plants grew mostly ON the rock. They were striking in bloom against the rock; in fruit, collecting required careful traversing of steep rocky outcrops. Given how prolifically they produce seeds, and how tiny the seeds are, it was easy to collect the required 10,000 seeds. It was much more difficult teasing out apparent good seeds and counting them under the microscope.

  • Orthodox Seed Banking

In 2021, CPC contracted the Rae Selling Berry Seed Bank to recollect seed from a population currently held in long term orthodox seed storage as part of an IMLS-funded seed longevity experiment. The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation will evaluate how germination tested viability and RNA Integrity of seed lots decline over time in storage.
