This was no small feat. Although numbers of individual plants and available seeds were not numerous, seed collection was a success. With available habitat for E. spinulosa having dwindled drastically with its conversion to pine plantations and all reported populations of Eurybia spinulosa occurring on private timber company lands, it was refreshing to learn that it occurs at the well-managed St. Joe Buffer Preserve. In this context, seedbanking the measly six maternal lines (ML) was a small but mighty effort, harvesting enough seeds per ML to be divided between the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Conservation Seed Bank and the National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation (NLGRP). With limited seed set, these six MLs now safeguarded in long-term conventional storage represent genetic diversity across 3 sites where only 5, 3, and 1 individual were present and producing seeds.
