The mimbres figwort is found only in southwestern New Mexico, specifically in the middle-to-southern Gila Mountains and Black Range. It is generally locally abundant, but populations are scattered and widely separated. An easily accessible population may be found in Gallinas Canyon north of Railroad Canyon campground, where it grows plentifully, especially at the base (or cracks within) large rock formations near the creek. S. macrantha specimens were noted to be more wilted and insect-damaged than surrounding vegetation, however, the Gallinas Canyon population still seems quite healthy. The number of individuals within the Gallinas Canyon population is estimated at approximately 400 plants.

Despite being range-limited and locally abundant, the showy flowers of S. macrantha have become popular in southwestern cultivation, marketed under the name "red birds in a tree".
