Description:

Phacelia insularis var. insularisis a decumbent (reclining), branched annual of the waterleaf (Hydrophyllaceae) family. The short-hairy and glandular stems grow to 1.5 dm (6 in) high from a basal rosette of leaves. The small lavender to violet, bell-shaped flowers are borne in loose cymes. Phacelia insularis var. insularis grows along coastal strand, coastal bluffs, grasslands, coastal sage scrub, chaparral, oak and ironwood woodlands, riparian woodlands, and conifer forest. [NatureServe]

There are only 6 know occurrences of Phacelia insularis var. insularis that are found on San Miguel and Santa Rosa Islands of California. [CNPS]

Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden holds 6 accessions of Phacelia insularis var. insularis in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 4242 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.
