Description:

This perennial herb has several narrow leaves 6-15 cm long and 20 to 30 pedicels bearing bright yellow perianths (petals and sepals), each with a green stripe. The flowers of this species are more delicate than the common goldenstar (Bloomeria crocea), and the filaments bearing the anthers are distinct and separate, while in the common species they are fused into a ring at their base.

Where is San Diego Goldenstar (Bloomeria clevelandii) located in the wild?

Habitat:

Chaparral, coastal scrub, valley and foothill grassland, vernal pools, mesa grasslands, scrub edges. Grows in clay soils, often on slopes that are shaded for a portion of the day.

Distribution:

This species is found within San Diego County, California and Baja California, Mexico.

States & Provinces:

San Diego Goldenstar can be found in California

Which CPC Partners conserve San Diego Goldenstar (Bloomeria clevelandii)?

CPC's Plant Sponsorship Program provides long term stewardship of rare plants in our National Collection. We are so grateful for all our donors who have made the Plant Sponsorship Program so successful. We are in the process of acknowledging all our wonderful plant sponsorship donors on our website. This is a work in progress and will be updated regularly.

  • Propagation Research

SDZG has made seed collections from 5 different populations from 2015 to 2016 on City of San Diego lands. Collections where from areas throughout the County and hopefully represent much of the species' genetic diversity. Collections underwent germination tests resulting in high viability percentages for all collections, and many germinates were propagated. Bulbs from the germinates are alive and have sprouted yearly.

  • Orthodox Seed Banking

Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, San Diego Zoo Global holds 6 accessions of Bloomeria clevelandii in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 33405 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.

  • Seed Collection

Based on an August 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, San Diego Zoo Global has collected 6 seed accessions of Bloomeria clevelandii from 5 plant occurrences listed in the California Natural Diversity Database. These collections together emcompass 1069 maternal plants

Research into the dormancy cues would be helpful in gathering accurate data when tracking population status. There is no way to accurately count individuals within a population without knowing if individuals are dormant underground, and monitoring across many years and under different climatic conditions is needed to accurately track any decline in population. Further ex-situ collections would ensure all genetic information is conserved. Genetic research into population relatedness could inform how many ex-situ collections are necessary.

It is a part of the San Diego Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP) and many of the population on conserved lands are monitored yearly.

Though the number of historic occurrences is high, there is only data on roughly 35 extant occurrences. There are 23 occurrences that occur on conserved lands throughout the County, and no data on any populations in Mexico. As with all geophytes, the number of individuals within a population fluctuates on a yearly basis, and populations must be monitored over many years to get an accurate feel of its stability.

Because individuals are dormant for much of the year they can easily be overlooked and are susceptible to bulldozing and development. Invasive grasses are also able to out-compete.
