Description:

Short-lived and sprawling, L. kamolensis is an herb that produces yellow flowers that later form into achene fruits. Its flowering season is from November to May.

Where is Nehe (Lipochaeta kamolensis) located in the wild?

Habitat:

The perennial herb grows along the bottom of rock ledges in dry to mesic scrub or dry lowland forests.

Distribution:

On the southern side of East Maui, this herb has been observed to grow in the gulches of Kamole, which is state-owned. It grows at elevations from 40 to 602 meters.

Ecological threats to L. kamolensis include habitat destruction from land development by humans and feral ungulates, predation from livestock, direct competition with introduced invasive plants, and unmanaged fires.

This species suffers from habitat destruction by cattle and goats, predation by goats and probably by cattle, fire, and its small number of individuals.
