Arctostaphylos virgata is also known by two common names inspired by the areas that this species can be found: Bolinas Manzanita & Marin Manzanita. A. virgata has a wide preference for different fauna including chaparral, mixed evergreen forest, redwoods, and closed-cone pine forest at elevations ranging from sea level up to 700m. In Marin County (north of San Francisco), there are less than 20 natural occurrences left across different national reserves including Bolinas Ridge, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Muir Woods. They are identifiable by their white blossoms (Jan – March), deep red bark, and their erect, tree-like structures known to grow as tall as 5 meters. A. virgata is an Imperiled species that faces ongoing threats including fire suppression and road development.
