Currently known from 5-6 sites in south Texas. (In 1984 there were only 3 individual plants of this species known to survive, but in 1985 an additional site - the un-manicured grounds of an old cemetary - were found to harbor a population of about 10,000 plants. In the early 1990s, a satellite population was found on a highway right-of-way near the cemetery and 3 more sites were found on a National Guard tract.) The Gulf Prairie habitat on which this species depends has been largely destroyed or greatly altered by development (both by urbanization and the oil and gas industry), conversion to agricultural and grazing land, and the introduction of exotic plants. This low-growing species is particularly threatened by non-native, invasive, tall grasses that have replaced much of the native vegetation in the region. Hoffmannseggia tenella now occurs only in ""refuge"" areas where native grasses still predominate, or in places subject to frequent mowing.
