Description:

Otherwise known as the Schreiber’s Manzanita, Arctostaphylos glutinosa is a critically endangered member of the Manzanita family with only six known populations left as of 2013; all of which can only be found in northern Santa Cruz, CA. This sturdy shrub is a 3’oclock bloomer (March-April) that produces clusters of pale pink, urn-shaped flowers and prefers a mixed pine forest/chaparral habitat where it can grow up to 2m tall. A. glutinosa’s also has a preference for the region’s shale (chalk) sediment, a prime contributor for its global status. In recent years, there’s been a wave of corporate site development for future missile launch sites (which are often based on chalky sediment). Other threatening factors include road maintenance and other forms of human development in the area.
