As part of CPC's IMLS funded initiative to determine seed storage longevity in wild rare plant species, seed of Cusick’s buckwheat (Eriogonum cusickii) was collected in the BLM’s Black Hills ACEC, just inside the Northern Basin and Range ecoregion of central Oregon.  This ACEC was established partly because it contains a healthy population of this rare plant. I arrived at a good time in the plant’s phenology, and the ample seeds were easy to collect by pinching the umbels. Cleaning seed of Eriogonum species is fairly easy using wire mesh to filter out the spent flower parts.
