Description:

Slender, erect, glabrous annual to 30 cm tall. Leaves are alternate and reduced to scales (ca. 1 mm long). Flowers are in slender, lax racemes or panicles and very small (2.5 mm long) and whitish.

Where is Texas Screwstem (Bartonia texana) located in the wild?

Habitat:

Along wooded streams, in bogs, and creek bottoms in swampy tupelo (Nyssa aquatica) forests and bay-gall (Ilex coriacea) thickets. Often on elevated clumps of sphagnum moss or other organic matter. (NatureServe) Also in and around acid seeps in pine-oak forests on gemtle slopes. (Jackie M. Poole, et al, 2007)

Distribution:

East Texas: Angelina, Hardin, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, San Augustine, San Jacinto & Tyler Counties. Louisiana: West Gulf Coastal Plain parishes.

There are about 15 scattered occurrences known, in eastern Texas and Louisiana, containing a total of fewer than 1,000 individuals. The species' habitat is subject to several threats including logging, development, grazing, and agriculture.
