The decrease in this species' population today is due to unruly feral pigs in the area and competition with alien plant species, such as Koster's curse, a noxious weedy shrub from the American Neotropics.

Habitat degradation and/or destruction by feral pigs, potential predation by rats, competition with the noxious alien plant Koster's curse, and risk of extinction from naturally-occurring events and/or reduced reproductive vigor due to the small number are threats to this species.
