Jac Harvey (pictured) collecting Bidens torta with Kobey Togikawa from Pahole Natural Area Reserve in the Waiʻanae Mountain range on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi. B. torta is a shrubby flowering plant in the Asteraceae family and is endemic to the state of Hawaiʻi. It is typically found in habitats ranging from dry ridges to wet forests and bogs and at elevations ranging from 200-1200m. There is variability in leaf shape and pubescence. The achenes are strongly twisted or tightly coiled giving it the common name, Corkscrew beggarticks. For this accession, the seeds, or achenes, were collected when mature. The seeds usually germinate within 3 to 6 weeks, and the initial germination for this species was 72% on an agar substrate. Seeds of this species are orthodox and storable for 15+ years at -18ºC with little decrease in viability.

  • Orthodox Seed Banking

In 2021, CPC contracted the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum to recollect seed from a population currently held in long term orthodox seed storage as part of an IMLS-funded seed longevity experiment. The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation will evaluate how germination tested viability and RNA Integrity of seed lots decline over time in storage.
