Description:

A weakly erect subshrub, the Maui Phyllostegia is a member of the mint family. It is hairy with small white flowers with a hint of pink on its upper lip.

Where is Maui Phyllostegia (Phyllostegia stachyoides) located in the wild?

Habitat:

P. stachyoides is endemic to the wet montane forests of Molokai and West Maui, while on Hawaii, it grows on old volcanic substrates.

Distribution:

This species is estimated to have less than a thousand individuals growing in its native range today. Historically, it was only known from a population in Kauai, but it can now be found in Moloka`i, West Maui, and Hawaii.

This species is threatened by unregulated grazing by cattle, predation and habitat destruction by feral pigs, and introduced alien plants.
