In September 2020, Sheila Murray from The Arboretum at Flagstaff traveled to Apache National Forest in east-central Arizona to collect the critically imperiled Castilleja mogollonica.  The population Sheila collected is located near Hall Creek, just south of the Greer trailhead.  Sampled individuals occurred in an open meadow in a valley adjacent to Hall Creek (See picture below). Sheila’s collection represented 30 individuals and a robust 2750 seeds. At the time of collection, Sheila observed individual in different phenological stages, with about half of the individuals fruiting and half flowering. We note that there is some disagreement among taxonomists about whether Castilleja mogollonica, endemic to White Mountains in Apache County, is a distinct species from the more widely distributed Castilleja sulphurea. However at the time of this collection the species are considered by many to be distinct.
