C. filipes is rare, but when observed, it is a small shrub with whorled leaves and white, solitary flowers.

Ecological threats include habitat destruction from pigs, rats and deers, as well as direct competition with introduced plant species. The most notable alien plant species is glorybush.

It believed that there are 1,000 to 2,000 individual plants existing in this shrub's native range among 8 to 12 sub populations.
