Known only from southern Texas (where it is rare) and adjacent Tamaulipas, Mexico. Some sites have been extirpated by urban expansion. In the vegetative form, this species is often mistaken for another, common species that is widely, but incorrectly, believed to be parasitic, and is often sprayed with poisons. Collectors have also contributed to this species' rarity.
