The California Native Plant Society collected fresh seeds of the Shasta beardtongue, Penstemon heterodoxus var. shastensis, in 2023 for the IMLS Seed Longevity from a wild population at the CalTrans Grass Lake Rest Area in Siskiyou County. We had previously surveyed this population on June 10, 2021. Plants were growing around a gravel path in a pet relief area. The population extends onto private property on the other side of a fence, which we did not have access to. We returned to collect seeds from this population on July 24, 2023.

In 2021, CPC contracted the California Native Plant Society to recollect seed from a population currently held in long term orthodox seed storage as part of an IMLS-funded seed longevity experiment. The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation will evaluate how germination tested viability and RNA Integrity of seed lots decline over time in storage.

Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, California Botanic Garden holds 1 accessions of Penstemon heterodoxus var. shastensis in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 26280 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.

Based on an August 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, California Botanic Garden has collected 1 seed accessions of Penstemon heterodoxus var. shastensis from 1 plant occurrences listed in the California Natural Diversity Database. These collections together emcompass an unknown number of maternal plants
