Sagittaria teres is a perennial, aquatic arrowhead found in only five states in the Northeastern USA. It is generally found in, or on the shores of, sandy lakes, ponds and rivers with acidic water. It is distinct from other arrowhead species because it is the only one with round (as opposed to flat) leaf blades. It has two types of leaves. The underwater leaves are shorter, approximately 1-7 inches long, whereas the floating leaves can be up to 23.5 inches long. It has white flowers that can be produced above, below or floating on the surface of the water. It reproduces sexually via seed and asexually via clones. Sagittaria teres is of conservation concern because of its extremely restricted range and narrow habitat preference. As of 2010, there were only about 71 known occurrences, most of which in MA, with only about ¼ - ½ rated as having good viability (NatureServe, 2017). Also, being an obligate wetland species, any activity that alters the hydrology or water quality of a site can threatened the persistence this of plant. (Edwards and Sharitz, 2002; NatureServe, 2017; New England Wildflower Society, 2017; USDA and NRCS, 2017)
