Pictured are the seeds of Dubautia menziesii collected by Patti Welton and Bill Haus from the National Park Service. These seeds were collected from Haleakala National Park, on the island of Maui, Hawaiʻi. D. menziesii is a small shrub with vertically-oriented branches and stiff whorled leaves. Common in cinder of alpine zone and subalpine shrubland on Haleakala, Maui. They are endemic to East Maui and are a part of the Silversword Alliance. For this accession, the seeds, or achenes, were collected mature. However, the seeds often have a low fill rate, and the initial germination was 13% on agar substrate. Seeds of this species are storable for 5+ years at -18ºC. They are scheduled to be tested for long-term viability in 5 years.

In 2021, CPC contracted the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum to recollect seed from a population currently held in long term orthodox seed storage as part of an IMLS-funded seed longevity experiment. The National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation will evaluate how germination tested viability and RNA Integrity of seed lots decline over time in storage.
