Description:

Named after the native Ohlone people (that originally settled along the coast between San Francisco and Santa Cruz), the Arctostaphylos ohloneana can be found in maritime chaparral on areas with Monterey shale. The Ohlone Manzanita was first identified in 2008 and since being accepted as a separate species, it has been classified as Critically Imperiled with less than 100 individuals left. All occurrences of this species can be found at Big Basin Redwoods State Park (north of Santa Cruz). Blooming only two months out of the year (Feb – March), they grow erect to 1-2m tall with red-brown bark with pink/white blooms.

Based on an September 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, California Botanic Garden holds 1 accessions of Arctostaphylos ohloneana in orthodox seed collection. There are as many as 3580 seeds of this species in their collection - although some may have been used for curation testing or sent to back up.

Based on an August 2020 extract of the California Plant Rescue Database, University of California-Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden has collected 1 seed accessions of Arctostaphylos ohloneana from 1 plant occurrences listed in the California Natural Diversity Database. These collections together emcompass 9 maternal plants
