Description:

Chromolaena frustrata is a perennial herb approximately 8-40 inches tall. The flower heads are produced in groups of 20-25 per head with lavendar/blue disk florets.

Where is Cape Sable Thoroughwort (Chromolaena frustrata) located in the wild?

Habitat:

Chromolaena frustrata grows in open canopy habitats, including coastal berms and coastal rock barrens, and in semi-open to closed canopy habitats, including buttonwood forests, coastal hardwood hammocks, and rockland hammocks. C. frustrata is often found in the shade of associated canopy and subcanopy plant species; these canopies buffer C. frustrata from full exposure to the sun. (USFWS, 2013)

Distribution:

Fewer than 6700 plants of Chromolaena frustrata are known to exist in seven areas: Everglades National Park, Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Lignumvitae Key, Long Key, Big Munson Island, and Boca Grande Key. (USFWS, 2013)

According to a March 2023 extract of the Florida Plant Rescue Database, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden holds 6 accessions of Chromolaena frustrata totalling approximately 1405 seeds representing 84 maternal lines.
