Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden conservation team members came across the Florida state endangered Small’s Flax (Linum smallii) while at Big Cypress National Preserve collecting another FLPR (Florida Plant Rescue) target species. From a distance, we assumed the yellow flowers to be the much more common Pitted stripeseed (Piriqueta caroliniana). However, closer inspection showed that it was in fact the flax which was also one of our target species. In a follow-up visit, National Parks staff lead us to an extensive sub-population where we were able to make a substantial collection. After two visits we accumulated 4,060 seeds from 181 maternal lines.

According to a March 2023 extract of the Florida Plant Rescue Database, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden holds 2 accessions of Linum carteri var. smallii totalling approximately 32 seeds representing 13 maternal lines.
